SkillShare Workshops and Plant Sale - Saturday, April 25th from 10 AM - 5 PM

Come join us for a day of workshops at CAC Beardsley Community Farm! This year we will feature three workshops: Growing Oyster Mushrooms, Organic Disease Management, and Seed Saving. We will also have our annual plant sale with herbs, flowers, and heirloom peppers and tomatoes. Children's activities will be available all day.

10:00 AM - Tour of CAC Beardsley Community Farm with light refreshments

11:00 AM - Growing Oyster Mushrooms with Bob Hess of Everything Mushrooms
$25 pre-sale, $30 walk-in

Get ready for this fun and casual hands-on workshop on growing oyster mushrooms in a straw medium. This workshop will cover selecting straw substrates, chopping and preparing media, hot water pasteurization, fruiting container preparation, care and harvesting. Participants will take home their own mushroom fruiting bag. Special pricing available for participants looking to share a mushroom bag. Space is limited, so sign up early! Bob Hess, owner of Everything Mushrooms, has been growing and culturing specialty mushrooms professionally since 2006.

1:00 PM - Organic Disease Management in the Vegetable Garden with Dr. David Butler of UT's Dept. of Plant Sciences
$5 pre-sale, $7 walk-in

This workshop will focus on the basics of plant disease control in organic gardening systems. Topics will include systems-based strategies such as crop rotation, cover crops and soil management practices; cultural practices such as sanitation, host resistance, soil disinfection, and planting and irrigation methods; as well as a brief discussion of biological, botanical and mineral products that can be used when problems arise. Dr. David Butler is an Assistant Professor in the area of organic, sustainable and alternative crop production in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee.

3:00 PM - Saving Seeds: Preserving the Past, Securing the Future with Steve Todd of Neubert Springs Gardens
$7 pre-sale, $10 walk-in

The Saving Seeds workshop will focus on the basics of seed saving, with hands-on examples from different types of crops. Topics will cover different types of propagation, how to grow plants specifically for seed saving, how to best store your seeds, and how to avoid unwanted genetics. Steve Todd is a local farmer with Neubert Springs Gardens and currently grows seed for Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.

All-Day: $35 pre-sale, $45 walk-in
