Data Viz: An Open Brainstorm
On Thursday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 pm
Join an informal get together of journalists and programmers for an open brainstorm about the uses, process, and data visualization at the Crawford Family Forum in Pasadena. The event will include four panelists, ranging from developers to artists, to talk us through the processes and philosophies of data visualization. Each panelist will discuss their organizationâs process, then weâll open it up for discussion.
Speakers will include:
Moderator Casey Caplowe, GOOD Magazine
Ben Welsh, Database Producer, Los Angeles Times
Mark Hansen, Professor of Statistics, UCLA
Diego Prats, Co-founder and CEO, Border Stylo
Casey Reas, Professor of Digital Media Arts, UCLA
We encourage both Hacks and Hackers (journalists, designers, developers, programmers, entrepreneurs, photographers, editors, educators, and general tech enthusiasts!) to come out and enjoy the free refreshments and engage in what we expect to be a very interesting conversation.
And in honor of the holiday spirit, we ask that you bring new clothes or toys for kids and teens for our charity drive supporting Union Metro Homeless Servicesâ
About Hacks & Hackers: Technologists and journalists are coming together as reporting goes digital and Internet companies become media empires. Journalists sometimes call themselves âhacks,â a tongue-in-cheek term for someone who can churn out words in any situation. Hackers use the digital equivalent of duct tape to whip out code. Hacks/Hackers tries to bridge those two worlds. Itâs for hackers exploring technologies to filter, visualize and distribute information, and for hacks who use technology to find and tell stories. Hacks/Hackers is a growing digital community of people who seek to inspire each other, share information (and code) and collaborate to invent the future of media and journalism. Founded in Boston, H&H has now has communities in cities throughout the world. Read more at www.hacksandhackers.com or at http://meetupla.hackshackers.com/

The membership includes news writers, producers, designers, editors, photographers, technologists and others who produce news for the Internet or other digital delivery systems, as well as academic members and others interested in the development of online journalism.
