John Vance Sings The Henry Mancini Songbook
Actor, recording artist, and singer John Vance will brings his new show "The Henry Mancini Songbook" to The Arthur Newman Theatre at the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert on Saturday, December 11th at 7 PM as part of Les Michaels' Life Is A Cabaret Concert Series which continues through December.
It could be said that there are two types of jazz singers. Some function as instrumentalists, using the melody and lyrics as mere points of departure before they create abstract improvisations. The other type are those who are storytellers, digging deep into the meaning of the words they sing, paying respect to the composers' melodies while still making each song their own. John Vance falls into the latter category.
Always interested in acting, Vance earned a BA in Drama from the University of Virginia but singing came first. An early highpoint was singing next to Jack Jones and Kay Starr in "The Glenn Miller Band Reunion" for PBS. But later came a strong career as a character actor, and among his many credits have been roles on television: "Two And A Half Men," "Malcolm In The Middle", movies: "Leatherheads," with George Clooney and Renee Zellweger, "Back To The Beginning," "The Natural," "How I Saved The World," and "Stitches", in addition to numerous theatrical productions, and television commercials.
His CD recordings include "It's All Right With Me" and "Dreamsville" which is described as a bit more sophisticated, with arrangements that are less traditional, overall it's more of a jazz recording. Joining John will be music director, pianist and arranger Jeff Colella. Tickets for the show are $10 cash only at the dooor and reservations may be made at 760-325-2731. Show time is 7 PM and the box office opens at 6 PM.
