HATTIESBURG - An Irish Christmas: Songs & Music from West Cork
The traditional Irish music trio, Legacy, will tour the southern states again this winter to present their highly acclaimed program "An Irish Christmas Celebration: Traditional Songs and Music of West Cork." For 2010, their tour extends from Dec. 11th to the 19th with stops in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana.
The Christmas show is a collaborative effort of Legacy and Irish singer Dr. Jim Flanagan. The show is a mix of Irish holiday songs and stories along with occasional sets of holiday-themed tune sets (played in traditional style) for good measure. Jim, who originally hails from Ballyvourney, County Cork, Ireland, serves as the MC for the program. In addition to being an accomplished singer/entertainer, Jim also engages in the study of Irish culture as Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the Univ. of Southern Mississippi adding a unique perspective to his Christmas stories.
Drawing from this program, Legacy and Flanagan have collaborated to produce a holiday recording entitled: An Irish Christmas: Songs & Music from West Cork. The album features 16 tracks of material drawn from Irish holiday traditions. This includes traditional songs for the Christmas season in West Cork and beyond, including nativity, St. Stephens Day traditions of 'going on the wren', and songs the New Year. Legacy's forte of deftly played dance tunes with holiday themes garnish this midwinter collection.
"The songs and stories are drawn from seasonal traditions of the Celtic nations, with an emphasis on West Cork," says Valerie Plested of Legacy. "The Christmas music, except for one piece (which will be sung in the Irish language), will likely be completely new for listeners, though the songs are very old!"
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on Pearl Street again is hosting this holiday event Monday, December 13th. The show will begin at 6:30pm, and tickets are $12 (discounts available for members of Covenant Presbyterian, Celtic Heritage Society, and Jackson Irish Dancers).
