Boulder Bassoon Quartet
The Boulder Bassoon Quartet performances consist of original works for bassoon quartets plus arrangements of familiar tunes that impress and engage a wide audience of all ages. Together since 2006, their concerts entertain and educate the audience about the bassoon and its versatility. The Quartet's substantive repertoire includes pieces that vary in length (from 90 seconds to 18 minutes), and style (classical, jazz, pop). Some of their original pieces have been written by local composers such as Bill Douglas and quartet member Kent Hurd; arrangements include well known tunes such as music by the Beatles and film scores Star Wars and Catch Me If You Can. These talented musicians have performed throughout Colorado and at international engagements, including the premiere of So Cliché, a piece written especially for the Boulder Bassoon Quartet at the 2011 International Double Reed Society Conference. Other performances include the Estes Park Music Festival, Englewood Arts Presents, Colorado Symphony Orchestra Guild at the Governor's Mansion and Lafayette Art Night Out. The BBQ engage the audience a great deal through an illuminating look at how musicians approach music, both familiar and unfamiliar.
Each member attended the University of Colorado College of Music where they studied with Yoshiyuki Ishikawa. Members of the Quartet perform regularly with major professional ensembles throughout Colorado such as the Colorado Music Festival, Colorado Ballet, Boulder Chamber Orchestra, and the Colorado Mahler Fest Orchestra. They are active members of the arts community and committed to music education.
Michael Christoph has been the instructor of Bassoon at Metropolitan State University of Denver since 2010, teaching bassoon as well as music theory labs and music appreciation.
Kent Hurd is currently Co-Principal Bassoon of the Boulder Chamber Orchestra and occasionally performs as a solo pianist. Brian Jack is a bassoonist, educator, and music administrator living in Boulder Colorado. He is a member of the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and has performed with the Colorado Music Festival, Colorado Symphony and Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Ethan Turner is a freelance bassoonist in his home state of Colorado. Ethan has toured Austria and Hungary and performed in some of Europe's finest concert halls such as the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Come listen to the warm, dark, reedy voice of the bassoon as they play selections from Beatles to Bach; jazz to pop. Say goodbye to March and welcome spring in the Rockies with this entertaining program.
