Desert Island Live! Featuring the Music of Tom Waits
The next in the Desert Island Live series will feature Stu Dias (Soggy Po Boys, Mother Superior and the Sliding Royals, Shango), with an impressive ensemble of local musicians and dancers, celebrating the music Tom Waits by performing two of his studio albums in their entirety.
Waits' 1985 Rain Dogs is an incredibly diverse collection of songs, with influences ranging from Kurt Weil to New Orleans brass bands, proving he can comfortably write for almost any genre and capture any sound he wants. It is a favorite among Tom Waits fans.
The hauntingly beautiful 2002 release Alice is a fever dream loosely based on the Lewis Carroll stories and comprises many pieces from a collaboration with Anton Wilson on a theatrical production of the same name. It is a heartbreakingly gorgeous record.
We have amassed quite an orchestra for the evening:
Stu Dias - vocals Jonny Peiffer - arranger, percussion, keys Mike Effenberger - arranger, organ, accordion, keys Eric Klaxton - arranger, alto sax Jon McCormack - guitar Nick Phaneuf - guitar Steve Roy - bass Eric von Oeyen - drums Nihco Gallo - mallets, percussion Zach Lange - trumpet Claude Fried - trombone and various low brass Matt Langley - saxes and bass clarinet Emily Bowes - violin Taylor Blankenship - viola Lucy Fillery-Murphy - cello Nate Moyer & Elyssa Bigos - dance
