World-renowned Moroccan Gnawa musician Hassan Hakmoun will join Boston's dub-jazz collective Club d'Elf for a special collaborative evening of music, with proceeds going towards the legal defense fund for Kousmat Mohammed, a respected Moroccan musician incarcerated in an INS prison since September. Kousmat appears on the upcoming D'Elf CD Electric Moroccoland, and has been living in the US for 27 years, married to an American woman but not recognized in the courts since it took place in a mosque. He was caught in one of the recent immigration raids and must raise $10,000 to post bond so that his battle to maintain his legal right to remain in the country can begin.
Born in Marrakech, from the age of seven Hassan Hakmoun was groomed to be a member of the Gnawa, a mystical brotherhood of Sufi musicians who perform all-night rituals known as Derdeba where participants go into trance and are cured of all manner of physical and spiritual ailments. Making his NYC debut in '87 at Lincoln Center he has since traveled the world and performed with such artists as Peter Gabriel, Miles Davis, Kronos Quartet, Paula Cole, Don Cherry, and many others and has released many CDs under his name.
During both shows he will perform a set of traditional Gnawa music with Brahim Fribgane, and then both will perform with Club d'Elf, in a one-of-a-kind blending of Gnawa & Berber music from Morocco with jazz, drum'n'bass and dub and more. Don't miss it!
