Never the Bridesmaid by Bill Jepsen
Never The Bridesmaid, a new comedy by Chicago playwright Bill Jepsen, will be the next offering at Glenview's Oil Lamp Theater. This delightful love story had its Jeff Award-winning world premier at the Polarity Ensemble Theater in Chicago just two years ago. Oil Lamp's Executive and Artistic Director Keith Gerth will direct this hilarious and poignant look at the many dimensions of modern romance.

Maria and Anthony (Daniella Rukin and Martin Hughes) are a pair of twins whose happily-married parents Elmer and Doris (Stephen Smith and June Miller) are about to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, these young adults haven't shared their parent's good fortune in life or in love. In fact, they're both living back at home and their romantic lives have been a bit of a disaster.

Maria has been divorced twice and widowed once. She's lonely and longs for a loving relationship, but can't quite get past the idea that she's a "loser" in love who will never live up to what she sees as her parents' ideal marriage. But into her world comes Brian (Eric Loughlin), a family friend from childhood who was the best man at her first wedding. Brian has returned home to Chicago and makes a point of reconnecting with his old friend Maria. Could he possibly?

Maria's brother Anthony is a literary scholar who has his own problems. He was dumped by his fiancé four years earlier and now he's so gun-shy and cautious with women that he's hardly dated since. Perhaps Maria's close friend Kathleen (Cristiana Barbatelli), a career-oriented young professional, can weave her way into his life in unexpected ways. Might she uncover something special?

Therese (Desiree Staples), another friend of the family, adds her own layer of quirky frustration with romance when she comes over seeking solace after the breakup of her engagement. Who knew that her fiancée would object when she went to bed with a mutual friend?

These are just some of the many questions that are asked  and answered  in Never The Bridesmaid.  Come to the Oil Lamp Theater and join with these endearing characters as they explore the intricate complexities of love, and the many wonderful and often humorous ways we all have of finding what the heart really wants.

"Jepsen has a fine feel for his characters, a sharp ear for dialogue and a snappy way with unspooling his plot."    Hedy Weiss Chicago Sun-Times

"Never the Bridesmaid is a life-affirming story. You will cry, and when you try to stop yourself, you will cry some more.  Kristen Mitchell, Cheeky Chicago

"It will warm your heart a lovely, life affirming piece."    Kelly Kleinman, WBEZ
