The new Te Amo Jazz music concert series with TEATRO Si strives to celebrate the best of Jazz fusion performance that comes to us from various regions of South America. Outstanding professional artists will present their talents to a New Jersey audience at monthly concert performances that demonstrate the spirit of the young and established musician. This evening's Te Amo Jazz concert event brings to the intimate Rahway ArtHive art gallery stage the in demand original and sophisticated Brazilian jazz sounds of Brazilian percussionist and founder Maurício de Souza and his BOSSA BRASIL® music quartet.
Born in Brasília, Brazil, Maurício de Souza is a jazz drummer who easily performs in both traditional jazz and Brazilian jazz styles. His good taste and finesse have allowed him to play in numerous settings with various accomplished musicians. Maurício studied with world renowned jazz drummer and master teacher, Joe Morello for eight years. He also had a year of private studies with distinguished all-round percussion teacher Glenn Weber. Aside from the inspiration of Mr. Morello, other influential performers include Buddy Rich, Airto Moreira, Dave Weckl, Roy Haynes, and Bill Stewart.
Since settling in Northern New Jersey in 2004, de Souza has been very active in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, performing at some of the finest jazz clubs not only as a side man but also as a band leader. In New York, de Souza has been heard at Smoke Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Garage Jazz Club, Cornelia St. Cafe, Lenox Lounge, Bar Next Door, Cachaça Jazz N' Samba Club, Cleopatra's Needle, Kitano Hotel, Jule's Bistro, Cutting Room, Via Brasil, Brazil Grill, Village Underground, New York Athletic Club, and Bubby's (Brooklyn) to name a few. Internationally, Maurício has performed in Brasilia, Brazil at well known jazz venues. Other performances include appearances as guest percussionist in numerous orchestral concerts with the Bergen Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Orchestra and the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro de Brasilia (Brazil).
De Souza's group, Bossa Brasil® performs the most sophisticated Brazilian music, including the exotic rhythms of the Baião and the Chorinho.
