Nature in Concert
New Resonance Orchestra presents Nature in Concert
January 12th and 13th
Pavilion of the Two Sisters, New Orleans City Park, 8 pm
New Resonance Orchestra turns the traditional classical concert on its head with its multi-media illumination, Nature in Concert, a musical exploration of man's complex relationship with the natural world.
NRO's hip, young musicians perform a collage of works for chamber orchestra by Haydn, Rameau, Schubert, Beethoven and Janacek. From stunning opera excerpts by Jean-Phillippe Rameau which evoke the awesome, sometimes cruel power of nature to intimate songs of Franz Schubert which celebrate nature as a source of inspiration and guidance, Nature in Concert features a diversity of styles and viewpoints.
Interspersed with the music, two actors traverse through the performance space on a fictional nature walk through City Park. Their discussion, drawn from texts by Lord Byron, Henry David Thoreau, Michael Pollan and Wendell Berry, provokes awareness of how the human and natural world are in constant interaction—sometimes sympathetically, sometimes antagonistically. Anchoring the themes of the musical and literary collage in a contemporary context, video projections focus attention on the constant interaction between the human and natural world in New Orleans.
As New Orleanians grapple with the long-term effects of the recent Gulf oil spill, the question of how we interact with nature is more critical than ever. By examining this question through the imaginative lens of music, literature, visual art and theater, Nature in Concert stimulates dialogue and promotes positive social change in the city. Nature in Concert also demonstrates the power and relevance of classical music in today's world and makes the music more accessible to a wider audience in New Orleans.
New Resonance Orchestra performed its first program, Rebuilding Appalachian Spring, in November 2008 to packed houses at the NOLA Candle Factory in the Bywater and to critical acclaim."By the end of the piece, a solemn, even reverential hush had fallen on the standing-room-only, sneaker-shod crowd before they burst into applause. Clearly, everyone realized that for all the friendliness and accessibility, art on a very high level had just taken place." Frank Daugherty, in a review in the Mobile Press-Register
New Resonance Orchestra is a group of young, professional classical musicians in New Orleans working to reclaim classical music in America as a vital force for artistic expression and social change. With its fearless performances, New Resonance Orchestra makes music that is fresh, joyful and relevant. Creating interdisciplinary performance events and engaging with current issues, New Resonance Orchestra uses classical music to rejuvenate New Orleans.
