The Sonics didn't know it, but they were ahead of their time. It was in Tacoma, Washington in1964 when they emerged from the garage with a shocking new sound at a time when rock and roll was ripe for experiment.
Although punk and garage were yet unknown, producer Buck Ormsby from Etiquette Records encouraged The Sonics' move away from cover songs to their own unique soundâ¦.a whole new animal with raw power and energy that electrified the room.
Their debut album "Here Are the Sonics" in 1965, was the most uncompromising debut in rock history. Staying true to what they did like no other could - searing, abrasive guitar, vocal screams and unrelenting drums, came the second album, "Boom". With its release in 1966, the band's influence only grew, fueled by power singles, teen dances and concerts.
As music and audiences changed with the '60's British invasion, and a third album that did not meet the band's expectations, the band departed ways in the late '60's.
Over the years, fans and music enthusiasts around the world pleaded for the Sonics to reunite. Fast forward to the 21st century, when finally in November 2007 the Sonics accepted an invitation to perform in New York City.
Following New York, in March 2008 they played their first gig in Europe to 2 sold out shows at the London Forum. Since that 2nd amazing date, the Sonics have performed in LA, Texas, Canada, and in '08, '09 and '10 toured through Sweden, Norway, France, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Finland, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and scheduling more US and international appearances in 2011. Their last NW appearance was on Halloween night 2008, they performed at Seattle's Paramount Theatre to a sold out audience.
Three years of reviews abound from incredible to unbelievable. The Sonics are back, they're wild, unrelenting, and to international audiences, an unforgettable experience.
Today's current Sonics line-up is Larry Parypa: guitar & bkg vocals; Rob Lind: sax & vocals; Jerry Roslie: keys & lead vocals; Freddie Dennis: bass & lead vocals; and Ricky Lynn Johnson: drums.
