"A Special Hell: Institutional Life in Alberta's Eugenics Years" by Claudia Malacrida, Ph.D.
"A Special Hell" has been over 15 years in the making. It draws on interviews with ex-inmates of Alberta's Michener Centre to tell a story that is powerful and cautionary. In addition to survivor stories, the research examines Eugenic Board and Michener Centre archival records to paint a harrowing picture of institutional life and its connection to the Alberta Eugenics program, which operated legally and publicly from 1928 to 1972. The book highlights questions about the fate of Michener today and of institutionalization in general.
