DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE with THE INVINCIBLE CZARS at Crescent Theater in Mobile, AL
The Invincible Czars, Austin's critically acclaimed connoisseurs of silent film score, return to Mobile in April for a screening of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE.
Fusing math-rock, classical music, lounge grooves, country shuffles and circusy polka, the band has built a name for themselves with their reinterpretations of classical works by Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, as well as their original scores for classic silent films.
DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE is, of course, based on the classic novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, about a scientists whose experiments lead to his evil side gaining a life of its own. John Barrymore (Drew's father) plays Jekyll, a good man driven by science in exploration of his repressed savage side. Unfortunately, these experiments give way to a monster and Edward Hyde is born.
John Barrymore's performance is out-of-this-world - it's astonishing to see the transformation begin as Jekyll becomes Hyde without the use of any makeup, instead relying purely on the power of Barrymore's ability to contort his face.
Scored in 2011, the Invincible Czars' soundtrack for DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE incorporates voice loops to create a haunting, understated experience. Themes from Eric Satie's Gnossiennes 1, 3 and 5 are used, as well as a complete arrangement of Debussy's Footsteps in the Snow. The score features cues written by bass player Henry Q Vines, violinist Phil Davidson and voice/winds mistress Leila Henley. (Written by Robert Saucedo)
