Mendelssohn's ST PAUL ORATORIO
During Felix Mendelssohn's life, this oratorio was frequently performed and very well received by audiences everywhere. However, once Mendelssohn composed Elijah, poor St. Paul was somewhat back-burnered. This is unfortunate, because it is a wonderful piece of music! Chronicling St. Paul's life, this 40-movement work takes us through Paul's baptism and conversion, his persecution at the hands of his former religious colleagues, and ultimately his martyrdom. Fortunately, for those of you who like a happy ending, the piece concludes with a beautiful, uplifting setting of Psalm 103. The piece also incorporates four chorales in the style of J. S. Bach. This is no coincident. Mendelssohn is credited with discovering Bach's music over half a century after it fell into obscurity. Be the first in your neighborhood to hear this delightful piece played in its entirety.
