Songs of Creation
Soli Deo Gloria presents "Songs of Creation" Friday May 1, 7:30 PM at University Presbyterian Church. The music explores joy, mankind and nature through the beautiful sonorities of the voices of Soli Deo Gloria. The opening portion of the concert features Jubilate" by Martin Ramroth in praise to God and "Sing Creations Music On" by the late Stephen Paulus which celebrates "nature's glee that is everywhere!" In a nod to the great American composer Randall Thompson the group sings "Pueri Hebraeorum" for double chorus which describes the Palm Sunday laying of the palms on the ground before Christ as He enters Jerusalem prior to the crucifixion. Contemporary American composer David Child's piece, "Super flumina Babylonis" describes the deep sorrow the Israelites felt during bondage in Babylon when they were asked to sing "Songs of Zion". On a more local note, Clovis composer Kevin Memley's "Reflections on Humanity" will also be presented: "Anadyomene", "If I Were the Velvet Rose" and "There Will come Soft Rains" with oboe. SDG will present 3 folksongs for women's voices by Johannes Brahms and the final portion of the concert will include the spiritual "Elijah Rock", "For Good" from the musical "Wicked", the folksong "The Erie Canal" . Directed by Dr. Julie Carter, this unique 18-voice women's chorale is by audition only and is comprised of talented singers from the Central Valley. They are accompanied by Kim Schapansky. The guest artists on the program will be the Women's Chorus from Fresno Pacific University also directed by Dr. Julie Carter. SDG will also present this concert at Visalia First Presbyterian Church Sunday May 3 at 3 pm, at the Porterville First Presbyterian Church Friday May 8 at 7:30 pm, and at San Joaquin Gardens Monday, May 11 at 6 pm.
