SCMS Presents the Baroque Festival - Jan Dismas Zelenka's Misa Votiva
J.D. Zelenka, a virtually unknown but gifted contemporary of J.S. Bach, wrote ornately operatic arias and virtuosic instrumental compositions to create his contrapuntal fugues, masses, and oratorios. In his interpretation and expression of the galant style taking root in the 18th century, he adopts musical language similar to Bach's, but with its own idiosyncratic translations characterized by unexpected harmonic twists, chromatic harmonies, and use of syncopation. This not-to-be-missed performance of his "Votive Mass" (for chorus, soloists, and orchestra) features special guests Jenifer Thyssen, soprano, Ryland Angel, countertenor, David Stevens, tenor, and Gil Zilkha, bass, along with the FPC Chorale and the St. Cecilia Baroque Festival Orchestra.
