Cello Portrait Dec 5, 2010
The warm color, bel canto sonority, and dark golden timbre are hallmarks characteristic of the classical cello. In the years since its beginnings as "the noblest and most profound" voice of the violin family, composers have given the cello an increasingly lyrical, expressive and virtuosic treatment.
Joining c:n players Theodore Nelson and Christina Coletta in a rarely heard cello ensemble are six leading cellists from the Cincinnati area, and a guest cellist from the acclaimed Enzo Quartet, Richard Belcher.
Performers:
Richard Belcher
Christina Coletta
Ilya Finkelstein
Sarah Kim
Theodore Nelson
Tao Ni
Susan Marshall Petersen
Alan Rafferty
The powerful, textured sonority of such an ensemble never fails to electrify, nor to conjure the passionate. This grand tour of cello octet music takes us from Albinoni to Schubert, Brahms to Boulez, and onwards to Part and the Beatles.
Enjoy the concert with a visual twist! c:n partners with celebrated photographer Michael Wilson, who is known for his portrait work of musicians. BB King, EmmyLou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Over the Rhine, Dawn Upshaw and Emmanuel Ax names a few. With live time, large screen projections of live concert portrait making, we are privy to Wilson's eye as he captures the creative process of the musicians. Details and intimate moments normally too far to see from the audience will here be larger than life!
