Rockin' Ramen!
Rockin' Ramen! will introduce attendees to the diverse, delicious, wide world of ramen from its history, ingredients including broth and noodles and flavors! Join Bill Kim, owner of Urban Belly for an informative and immersive evening that explores the art and craft of this not-as-simple-as-it-looks dish! We will be served a special multi course ramen dinner. Ramen has become all the rage these days. Broths vary. Noodles vary. Toppings vary. There are hundreds of types of noodles and all sorts of personal spins on broths and toppings. While it is considered a Japanese dish, this ramen has roots in China and lo mein. Those roots go back much further than the birth of instant ramen in 1958, which is credited to the Taiwanese-Japanese businessman, Momofuku Ando. There are multiple components to each authentic ramen dish: stock, noodles, seasonings and toppings. Essentially there are four main styles, and broths are named after their seasoning: shio (salt), shoyu (soy sauce), miso (fermented bean paste) and tonkotsu (pork). There are endless variations within those styles. All of this has created a cultish devotion and we will get to part take with one of Chicago's experts!
