Carmen Peláez was born in Miami to Cuban parents. Grand-niece to the revered painter, Amelia Peláez and radio star Ernesto Galindo, Carmen continues her family's artistic expression of life's challenges filtered through the Cuban experience in her ferociously comic and moving one-person play, RUM & COKE. She began writing this piece soon after graduating from the prestigious American Academy for the Dramatic Arts in New York in 1996. For RUM & COKE's development, she received a 1997 New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship and was able to launch a development production of the work in New York City. RUM & COKE tells the tale of a young Cuban American woman named Camila and the poignant and vibrant characters she encounters on her trip to Havana via Miami in this fiercely comic and moving tale about life seen through the Cuban lens. Ms. Peláez has performed her solo play RUM & COKE to raves in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and New York Off-Broadway at Abingdon Theater receiving critical acclaim by the NY Times, NY Daily News, W magazine photographed by Bruce Weber, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun, The Villager, The Westsider, Diario de las Americas, Vanidades and has been featured on Nightline With Ted Koppel. In 2012, Carmen won the HBO New York International Latino Film Festival Short Film Competition with The Acting Lesson, which she followed up with her second short, A Queen without His Crown. Most recently she was featured in Steven Soderbergh's SIDE EFFECTS and in 666 Park Avenue. Currently Carmen is in pre-production for the live theatrical shoot of RUM & COKE and in development with her first feature screenplay OCHO, a collaboration with artist Luis Gispert.
