An Evening with Las Hermanas Peláez
The Miami Dade College (MDC) Museum of Art + Design presents An Evening with Las Hermanas Peláez , a  twilight engagement benefiting the MDC Museum of Art + Design featuring sisters Ana Sofía and Carmen Peláez. The fundraising event includes an intimate book talk and cuisine pairing by food writer Ana Sofía Peláez author of The Cuban Table, A Celebration of Food, Flavors and History, (St. Martin's Press) followed by a ferociously comic and moving selection of scenes from the one-person play, RUM & COKE by actor, director and playwright Carmen Peláez.  This one-night-only event will take place on Wednesday, May 6th from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Museum located within the College's historic Freedom Tower. Tickets are $100 per person / $75 for MOA+D members and the event is limited to 150 guests. Each guest will receive a signed copy of The Cuban Table. All proceeds will directly support educational and ongoing exhibition programming at the Freedom Tower.

Ana Sofía and Carmen Peláez are grand-nieces to the revered painter Amelia Peláez and radio star Ernesto Galindo, continuing in their family's artistic expression.  Ana Sofía Peláez shares her love of food, flavors and history in her recently published book. Special for the event, appetizers, cocktails and desserts featured and inspired from the book will be served, giving guests a unique opportunity to sample authentic treasured recipes. In addition, Miami's unique Little Havana based ice cream shop Azucar, will unveil and serve its new "Torre de Libertad" or "Freedom Tower" flavor. The evening continues as Carmen Peláez performs RUM & COKE, a tale about a young Cuban American woman named Camila and the poignant and vibrant characters she encounters on her trip to Havana via Miami in this fiercely comic and moving tale about life seen through the Cuban lens.

Ana Sofía Peláez has been featured by the New York Times, InStyle Magazine and Food 52 among others.  She has become a regular contributor to the Cooking Channel's  Devour the Blog, written for  The Daily Beast ,  Edible Manhattan ,  Edible Brooklyn ,  NY Daily News , and has been nominated by Saveur as one of the  Best Regional Cuisine  blogs of 2012. She is the founder of the award winning food blog Hungry Sofia and author of her first cookbook, The Cuban Table, published by St. Martin's Press in 2014.

Carmen Peláez has performed her solo play RUM & COKE to raves in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and New York Off-Broadway at Abingdon Theater receiving critical acclaim by the NY Times, NY Daily News, W magazine photographed by Bruce Weber, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun, The Villager, The Westsider, Diario de las Americas, Vanidades and has been featured on Nightline With Ted Koppel.  In 2012, Carmen won the HBO New York International Latino Film Festival Short Film Competition with The Acting Lesson, which she followed up with her second short, A Queen without His Crown. Most recently she was featured in Steven Soderbergh's SIDE EFFECTS and in 666 Park Avenue. Currently Carmen is in pre-production for the live theatrical shoot of RUM & COKE and in development with her first feature screenplay OCHO, in collaboration with artist Luis Gispert.
