CRAFT FORWARD SYMPOSIUM 2011
CRAFT FORWARD SYMPOSIUM 2011
California College of the Arts is pleased to present Craft Forward, a symposium on craft.
"Craft only exists in motion." -- Glenn Adamson, keynote speaker
In recent years, a host of global issues have fueled a renaissance in the field of craft theory and practice. The longing for tactility and materiality in the digital age, the focus on local production in a worldwide economy, and the renewed interest in the unique object in a mass-produced environment have generated forward-thinking debates about the nature of craft and its growing relevance to a broad range of disciplines.
Craft Forward examines the multifaceted practices that distinguish and blur the historically charged edges between craft, art, design, architecture, and writing. The symposium brings together a diverse group of makers and thinkers to explore the ethos of craft and its resurgence in the 21st century.
Craft Forward focuses on craft in relation to a series of concepts, including materiality, technology, production, identity, and revolution. Speakers include Ayse Birsel, Liz Collins, Bridget Cooks, Teddy Cruz, David Howes, Lauren Kalman, Sheila Kennedy, Chris Lefteri, Lydia Matthews, Cat Mazza, Allyson Mitchell, Chris Taylor, Otto von Busch, Frank Wilson, Paul Flores, Mimi Robinson and others.
For more information about presenters, panels, events, and registration please go to cca.edu/craftforward.
Generous support for the Craft Forward symposium is provided by an anonymous donor and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support is provided by Grants for the Arts / San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund and by the Chalsty Aesthetics and Philosophy Initiative, made possible by a grant from the Chalsty Foundation. Special thanks to the American Craft Council for their partnership in the realization of the symposium.
