The Cripple of Inishmaan
The Theatre Department of Marin School of the Arts presents Martin McDonagh's poignant comedy, The Cripple of Inishmaan. When a Hollywood director visits a remote Irish island to make make his 1934 documentary, The Man of Aran, the locals clamor for their once-in-a-lifetime chance at movie stardom. But it's Cripple Billy, a frail young man with the odds stacked against him, who has the biggest Hollywood dream of them all. This biting comedy by the master of vicious fun, Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh (The Pillowman, In Bruges) is directed by Rodney Franz. The play examines an ordinary coming-of-age in extraordinary circumstances and confirms McDonagh's position as one of the most original Irish voices to emerge in the second half of the twentieth century.
Critics of the play rave: "Beneath the volley of barbs and loopy postures lies the same bedrock of wistfulness and exasperation that makes BEAUTY QUEEN so poignant. Mr. McDonagh has again created characters for whom the line between cruelty and kindness is slenderthe script features some unsettlingly surprising demonstrations of both affection and aggression. NY Times. "McDonagh'scomic talent appears unlimited, and he also has a wayof mixing up his humor with a touch of the poet and a profound sense of tragedy always dangerously lurking on comedy's untidy fringe. In short, young McDonagh is a playwright to reckon with" NY Post. "McDonagh's storytelling stylehas the clarity and power of fable. Each character enters not only with his own idiosyncrasy but with his own distinct idiom. McDonagh skillfully juggles rhythms and repetitions so as to illuminate the sadness, defensiveness and longing for connection underneath the characters' badinage." The New Yorker. "McDonaghis at root an Irish realist in the tradition of Synge, O'Casey, Friel and Billy Roche. He is also a born storyteller with a precocious sense of dramatic structure." London Times. "Mr. McDonagh [is] a realist with rich gifts[He] is immensely talented and bizarre." NY Observer.
