Proof - Cloverdale Performing Arts Center
Cloverdale Performing Arts Center presents Proof A play by David Auburn
Catherine is a 25-year-old woman who has spent years caring for her father Robert, a brilliant but mentally unstable mathematician. In fact Catherine has inherited some of her father's mathematical genius but when he dies she is left wondering how much of his mental illness has also been passed down to her.
Upon Robert's death, his ex-graduate student Hal discovers a brilliant new explanation about prime numbers in Robert's office. Catherine claims that she is the one who wrote this proof, but neither Hal nor Catherine's sister Clair believes that Catherine has the talent to create a work of such genius. Can Catherine prove that she is the author of the proof? Can she maintain control despite her fear of following in her father's footsteps as a brilliant mathematician whose career was ended in debilitating mental illness?
Though these questions may have arisen from a life in mathematics, the drama that unfolds is entirely a human one that will reach all of our hearts and minds.
A compelling and deeply felt play, Proof won 5 awards in 2001 including New York Drama Critics' Circle Best Play, Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and Tony Award for Best Play.
