Seeding the Poem: Masterclass with Robert Priest
We will focus on techniques for writing micro or 'seed' poems aphorisms, slogans, hook lines, jokes, maxims etc. with a view to also using them as centering points for longer oral/musical pieces such as spoken word poems, song lyrics or even formal poems such as sonnets or villanelles. Participants should come away with at least one and probably a lot more than one, micro work and and at least the beginnings of a maximally sized work containing the micro work.
Robert Priest, is the author of fourteen books of poetry, 3 plays, 2 novels, lots of musical CDS, one hit song and many columns for Now Magazine . His words have been decried in the legislature, posted in the Transit system, quoted in the Farmer's Almanac, and sung on Sesame street. His 2008 book: Reading the Bible Backwards peaked at number two on the Globe and Mail's poetry list. Rosa Rose, a book of children's verse, in praise of inspirational figures, (Wolsak & Wynn) recently won a silver moonbeam award in the U.S. and is a book of honour in the Lion and Unicorn Award for Excellence in children's poetry in North America. A new book of poems for adults, Previously Feared Darkness, was published in Sept 2013 by ECW press.
"Poetry full of flashes of insight. Imaginative in a strange way, he takes inordinate chances with logic, countering absurdity with absurdity, and expanding our sense of human emotional possibilities." -The Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature
"Grand & Mystic" -Jason Anderson (Eye Magazine)
"It's lyrical, mesmerizing and not overtly melodic or word anorexic pomo, but tenderly sublime. There's meat on the bones and it's fresh. Priest renders the quotidian and intellectualizes it for us in a genius-sampling tool--himself." -Broken Pencil
"A Canadian gem. For 2-5 year olds it's as the date perfection itself. This should be in every child's home." -CBC Radio
"These poems will undoubtedly be memorized and sung for a long time to come." -Canadian Book Review Annual
"Rosa Rose and Other Poems is a beautiful poetry collection that needs to be on every child's bookshelf and is sure to make young readers lovers of history and poetry." -Canadian Materials Magazine
