The Max Perkoff Band - High-Spirited, Straight-Ahead Trombone Stylist
"Max Perkoff plays jazz laced with surprising twists. His expressive trombone technique searches the possibilities of the instrument . . . ." - Nick Bensen, Bay Area Arts & Music Magazine

"Max Perkoff has a brawling style all his own . . . . He sounds like he’d be very much at home in a big band." - David Dupont, onefinalnote.com

Trombonist/pianist Max Perkoff can blow with the best of them. For example, he matched up beautifully with trombone great Roswell Rudd on the recent CD, Monk's Bones, by the Monk's Music Trio, a CD that won universal acclaim.

But Perkoff is also a highly accomplished band leader and composer, and for this visit to Jazz at Pearl's he'll be celebrating the release of his brand new CD, Infinite Search. Perkoff will be backed at Pearl's by the same dynamic band that appears on the CD: guitarist Randy Vincent, bassist Sam Bevan and drummer Paul van Wageningen.

Max Perkoff has jazz in his bones. His father, pianist Si Perkoff, has been on the forefront of the San Francisco jazz scene since his days at the piano at the legendary club Jimbo's Bop City during the heyday of the Fillmore District jazz scene. Max tells stories of sitting on the lap of drumming legend Elvin Jones at age two, and hearing his father rehearse in the basement throughout his childhood. In fact Si, who now interprets Thelonious Monk's music in the aforementioned Monk's Music Trio, was a personal friend of Monk's.

That's quite a musical foundation, and Max Perkoff has made the most of it. He graduated from Indiana University School of Music in 1985, and studied with jazz stars Barry Harris, Hal Galper and David Liebman, among others.

After making his way on the New York jazz scene, Perkoff returned to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989. He's fronted his quartet at venues including Yoshi’s, the Jazz School, San Francisco Performances at Six and, of course, Jazz at Pearl's. As a sideman, he's played at virtually every club and venue for jazz in the region. From 1992 to 1995, he played trombone for the Mike Vax Great American Jazz Band in festivals all over the western United States.

Perkoff is currently active with his own ensemble and the Harold Jones Big Band. He makes frequent guest appearances with the Monks Music Trio and provides piano and trombone support for vocalists Cami Thompson, Deborah Winters, Nika Reijto, Linda Kosut, Terese Genecco and Vicki Burns.

Be sure to hear Max Perkoff interviewed by Alicia Clancy on KCSM Radio's Morning Cup of Jazz, Wednesday morning, April 11, at 9:00 am.
