Erik Jekabson Band - Combustible trumpet jazz!
Intersection, [Erik] Jekabson's debut CD, documents the trumpeter's considerable gifts as a cutting-edge jazz player and writer.â - David Adler, Jazztimes Magazine
"Intersection, trumpeter Erik Jekabson's debut album as a leader, is an impressive affair . . . . a must-hear for fans of serious modern improvisation." â Matt Collar, All-Music Guide
Sizzling trumpeter Erik Jekabson is a San Francisco resident, and a Berkeley native, but this is an artist who's been around. He returned to San Francisco after six years on the high-octane NYC/Brooklyn jazz scene. As a leader, he released Intersection and brought his bands into front line Big Apple clubs like the Knitting Factory, the Cornelia Street Café and Jazz at Detour.
Heâs played with Illinois Jacquet, spent a year on the road with pop icon John Mayer, and soaked up the fire and funk of New Orleans for four years, performing with the likes of Woody Herman and Kermit Ruffins. Quite a resume for a hard-hitting young performer!
In addition to leading his own bands, Jekabson can be found around San Francisco performing with ensembles bands like the Realistic Orchestra and Pearlâs own Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. He comes to Pearlâs leading a marvelous ensemble including saxophonist Lawrence Connell, guitarist Jeffrey Burr, bassist Kurt Kotheimer, bass and drummer Eric Garland.
Youth, fire and potent, combustible jazz! All readily available courtesty of the Erik Jekabson Band.
Jekabson moved back to San Francisco from Brooklyn in July 2003 to attend the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He completed his studies May 2006, earning a master's degree in composition, graduating with honors in orchestration from the conservatory, and winning the Conservatory's 2004 Kris Getz award (for composing for young musicians). He's well rounded musician, to say the least, Jekabson has scored music for the award-winning documentary "Radio Grito" and orchestrated for the Trinity Lyric Opera Company.
Growing up in Berkeley, CA, Jekabson played in the Berkeley High School Jazz Band and toured Japan with the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Big Band in 1991. That same year, Erik moved to Ohio, where he studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. While at Oberlin, he went on two tours of the southern U.S., playing in major cities in order to bring attention to Oberlin's jazz program. It was on these tours that Erik discovered New Orleans, where he settled in 1994, after getting his bachelors degree.
Erik spent the next four years in New Orleans, playing in a myriad of musical settings, learning from the rich history of jazz musicians (particularly brass players), and becoming one of the most in-demand musicians in the city. He co-led the New World Funk Ensemble, which released a CD on the Turnipseed label and performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and led his own small-jazz groups in venues such as Snug Harbor. He composed and played with the funk band Galactic,
