"The Four Articulations" Keys to Enhancing Theatre Workshop with Dr. Ira Seidenstein
"The Four Articulations" starts with a normal physical exercise that
many people have been 'taught' in theatre. With this first exercise
Ira reveals the hidden mechanics and introduces a concept of "Weight
and Wait". Here he shows how this first exercise can try the actor to
be 'in' their own body and how that will directly enhance ones acting.
This understanding then gets incrementally tested until the Space-Time
Continuum exercises test and practice the whole gestalt. These
exercises also show the relation between the yin/yang of
comedy/tragedy or acting-and-clown. In one sense, if we broaden our
sense of what a good actor is, then we might include Robin Williams,
Sex And The City, Sasha Baron Cohen, Little Britain. Auteurs such as
The Coen Brothers, Woody Allen, Barrie Humprhies, Bill Irwin, Mike
Myers and many others also show us the deeper connection between
acting-and-clown. Either way, acting or clown, it is "actor's body in
the space of the theatre" that brings the text alive.
This workshop isolates specific techniques and principles that can be
applied and adapted to any play, playwright, director, or artistic
aesthetic. At the same time an actor can use any method in which they
have already been trained.
Ira has taught at Australian national institutions including NIDA,
NICA, WAAPA, Bell Shakespeare Company and The Actors Centre.
Internationally he was worked with Cirque Du Soleil, The San Diego
Repertory Theatre, The Eureka Theatre of San Francisco, The Commedia
School in Scandinavia, and he is mentor to a wide range of theatre
practitioners including Ponydance of Ireland, The Improfessionals of
Paris and amongst the Australians he mentors are physical duets The
Crackup Sisters and The Tutti Frutti.
