Los Angeles Pierce College Theatre's 2014-2015 Season continues this month with Laurel Ollstein's twisted and "pungent" comedy, Cheese.
Performances begin Friday, March 27 and continue through Sunday, April 5 in the Dow Arena Theatre in the newly renovated Pierce Performing Arts Building.
Pierce College Theatre faculty member and award-winning playwright Laurel Ollstein brings her hilariously twisted comedy to LAPC Theatre's Dow Arena Theatre, in the inaugural production in the beautifully renovated Performing Arts Building.
Welcome to Tillamook, Oregon: "the land of cheese, trees and ocean breeze." Griffin, a cheese sculptor, struggles in his marriage to Cindy, who lives in denial over the loss of their young son. Enter Billie, Cindy's best friend, a knocked-up, wannabe Hollywood actress, running from her failures. The secrets they keep and lies they tell fester and spoil like the rotting cheese that surrounds them in this twisted, modern day Kaufman and Hart-esque laugher. When the truth is revealed, the comedy is as sharp as the cheddar.
LAPC Theatre's production of Cheese is written and directed by LAPC theatre faculty member Laurel Ollstein, who is an award-winning actress and playwright, a director and a teacher in New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and San Francisco. She is currently revising her script, working with LAPC Theatre students in the Cheese cast, to enhance their educational experience in working with a playwright on a new play. For many years, as a member of the Actor's Gang (founded by Tim Robbins), she collaborated as an actress and debuted her new plays, including Cheese. She is currently a member of About Productions, where her contributions include writer/actor in On Earth as It Is in Heaven and writer/director for Showing Our Age, produced at the Ford Theater in Los Angeles with support through an NEA grant. She is also an artistic associate of Playwright's Arena, who produced her play The Dark Ages, and where she directed their 365 Plays. As a writer, her artistic involvement with EST-LA has continued for many years and most recently her play Anatomy of A Brain Injury was selected for Winterfest. Ollstein joined the Pierce College Theatre faculty in 2014.
The cast of LAPC Theatre's production of Cheese features Trevor Alkazian, Fiona Cheung, Vincent Cusimano, Elyse Hamilton, Michelle Kimsey-Bailey, Abby Soskin, Javiera Torres and Meagan Truxal.
Scenic design is by Michael Gend, costume design by Vanessa Stewart, lighting design by Victor Murillo and sound design by Edward Salas. Teryn Eikenberry is the stage manager. Cheese is produced for LAPC Theatre by Michael Sande.
Cheese opens on Friday, March 27 at 8pm, and continues on Saturday, March 28 at 8pm, Sunday, March 29 at 2pm, Friday, April 3 at 8pm, Saturday, April 4 at 8pm and Sunday, April 5 at 2pm.
