Steve Poltz brought to you by Michael ONeill
Hey- here's a good time to mention that Steve Poltz is the guy who stumbled upon Jewel. Yes, Jewel Kilcher. By "stumbled upon" we're saying that he beckoned this plucky Alaskan waitress in a San Diego coffee house- "hey, come up on stage with me and sing a song." A few months later, there are limos pulling up in front of said coffee house, ferrying in record company moguls who have come to hear the babe in swaddling tube tops. Around that time, Poltz thought it a capital idea if he and Jewel absconded to the Yucatan peninsula for a bit of creative R&R, as they say. Whilst on a beach in Mexico, the two of them sat over a guitar and wrote "You Were Meant For Me," which, as referenced earlier, ambled its way on to becoming the longest running song on the Billboard Top 100.
In the summer of 2008, Steve Poltz traveled back to his birthplace of Halifax, Nova Scotia to perform a series of shows. Mid-way through one of the dates, he noticed award winning songwriter, producer and performer Joel Plaskett in the audience. A long time fan, Poltz invited him on stage to perform the classic, "Light of the Moon," from Down At The Khyber. The two formed an instant friendship.
Soon after, plans were made for Plaskett to produce Poltz's next release at his studio, Scotland Yard. Recorded in analog on 16-track, 2-inch tape, the resulting, Dreamhouse (New Scotland, 2010), is Poltz's finest offering to date.
Starting with the stark and haunting title-track, as it progresses, the album's scope develops to include beautiful melodies and lush, quirky arrangements. Herohill said of the work, "this record will be another gem in his sparkling catalog."
Poltz continues to tour like a man possessed. Performing from Australia to Canada and throughout The United States of America, he clocks over 220 dates a year. The former Rugburns front man performs anywhere from house concerts to clubs and theaters, either touring solo or with his band The Flight Attendants. His fine finger picking and humorous storytelling have kept his fan base growing through word of mouth. His recent performance at NPR's Mountain Stage in West Virginia garnered a standing ovation.
