SCMS Presents Lawes Harp Consorts, Saturday Nov 27, 7 PM
Lawes Harp Consorts, Saturday, November 27, 7:00 PM:
William Lawes, titled the "Father of Musick" by King Charles I, was one of England's most prolific composers of chamber music during the Caroline Era. His music set the stage for the lavish entertainment of the Royal Court in the early part of the seventeenth century. Lawes died defending his king at the Siege of Chester in 1645, but in the years before his death, he composed 11 remarkable consort sets for harp, violin, bass viol, and continuo. Absolutely unique in the whole of English consort music, they unfortunately have also remained among the most obscure of his instrumental compositions, partly because of the fragmented condition of the manuscripts. But recent scholarship on the manuscripts has resulted in a new edition that provides convincing replacements for the missing parts. Each consort set has a distinct character, and together they exemplify the beauty, expressive depth, and compositional gifts of Lawes's work. The St. Cecilia Music Series offers them to you this fall, ably presented by special guests Becky Baxter, harp, Alan Austin, violin, and Michael Leopold, theorbo, with Jane Leggiero and James A. Brown, violas da gamba.
