This class will teach students how to properly light their film on a low budget. Avoid having problems in the editing room by learning important lighting techniques and watching gear demonstrations.
Class Agenda:
Production Gear and Lighting/Grip:
- Instruction of basic hard and soft lighting
- Recognizing color temperature and mixing sources
- Using ambient lighting, gels and diffusion, reflecting light, etc.
The Film Look:
- Depth of field/focus
- Coverage, camera moves, and blocking
Production Limits and Set Etiquette:
- General expectation of roles
- How to schedule and keep things moving to make and cover your realistic shot list
Instructor Bio:
Dario Sanmiguel has worked for decades in the motion picture industry as a cinematographer, gaffer, screenwriter, and international film festival programmer. With extensive experience in production in all genres, styles, and budgets, his knowledge of filmmaking gives great insight to help others achieve high production value and simplify the filmmaking process.
Besides his current journeyman status in SF's IATSE Local 16 (where he's worked on dozens of features), he was Executive Director and Festival Programmer 2001 & 02 for SF's Cine Accion. His personal works have won multiple grants and awards including Chicago Office of Fine Arts & Illinois Arts Council Filmmaking Grant, Festival 2000 Gordon Parks Award (Completion Funds), and Written Image Award 2004.
