Unfixed Arias
Unfixed Arias is a full evening work choreographed by Co-artistic Directors Natascha Greenwalt and Christin Call. Described by Seattle Dances as "layers of meticulously planned detail, meaning, and exquisite dancing," the work is an additive experience of audience movement, performance installation, visual art, live music, and concert dance as multiple structures for exploration of spaceboth metaphorically and physically. The cosmos is the unifying theme behind this series of vignettes, in which audiences encounter sardonically vamped up alien women of sci-fi camp, the detached forces of mass, charge, and rotation that create black holes, and wili-like preying mantis women who grieve into the void. The range in tones from the offbeat to the reverential is couched stylistically by Greenwalt and Call's choreographic voices, which utilize both the technical precision of balletic vocabulary and the experiential sensation of Gaga. The work began in 2012 as Insofar as the landscopic field report, a duet about two quirky alien researchers who encounter malaise and a deadly virus while discovering an uninhabited planet. Call and Greenwalt developed the work in 2013 and 2014, building around the duet, which still exists as a section of the work. This culminated in a two-night, sold-out preview performance at The Belltown Collective in May of 2014. In the re-working of the premiere event, new talent has been added to the mix. Stefan Gruber contributes animated elements, Erin Weathers ties together the costuming, and Jill Beasley contributes to the immersive set design. A deluxe program artzine curated by Call and Greenwalt will be available for sale with contributions by artists and writers on the subject of outerspace, black holes, constellations, grief, loss, connection, and reconstruction. Returning artists include Dani Norberg, who will build off of Amiya Brown's original otherworldly lighting, musical performances by Jackie An, the live performance of opera singer Serena Eduljee, and the music of Daniel Brigman and Taylor Merisko. The all-female cast of Arias are Christin Call, Natascha Greenwalt, Kat Murphy, Mariko Nagashima, Marissa Quimby, and newcomer Hannah Simmons. Pre-show performance installations will open at 7pm, with the show beginning at 7:30pm. No late admittance and seating will be limited, so we recommend buying tickets in advance online through brownpapertickets.com. Online sales close the day of the performance and then will be available at the door only.
*Opening Night only VIP Champagne toast with the cast. Limited qualities available. Please note that this work requires audiences to climb up and down stairs.
