An Experiment With An Air Pump
The plot of An Experiment With An Air Pump, written by British playwright Shelagh Stephenson, is framed in one location set two hundred years apart. The years are 1799 and 1999. As the turbulent world of both eras prepare to step into new centuries, two groups of scientists are engaged in debates on the ethical nature of scientific research. In 1799, Dr. Joseph Fenwick, before his large and loving family, tests the resiliency of a dove deprived of air. The moral dilemma mirrors that of the present day when Ellen, a geneticist, struggles with whether to accept a high-paying position to continue her work on the human genome for a commercial agency. While the drama contends with human uncertainty and responsibility in increasingly technological societies, additionally at stake is gender politics, as well as the high cost of romantic passions and family allegiances. There is also a mystery on the operating table. In 1999, a skeleton has been found in the basement. Whose corpse is it, and why has it been hidden inside the home?
