Uncreativity Festival (4-3)
Performance artist Billy Mullaney presents an evening of new performance, writing, and video made using contemporary forms of appropriation: transcribing, cutting, rearranging, pasting, and recontextualizing. "Uncreativity Festival" brings a national roster of artists to the Bryant-Lake Bowl, introducing Minneapolis to a dynamic and challenging range of appropriation-based practices. Mullaney creates a casual atmosphere of sharing research by choreographers, poets, and theater artists promoting Uncreativity at a time when Creativity is Indexed.
The evening includes excerpts of three works created and performed by Mullaney: poetry culled from a high school geometry textbook, a reenacted episode of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" complete with live pianist, and "SEMESTER," a word-for-word and equation-for-equation delivery of MIT's relativistic quantum mechanics lecture "Quantization of the Free Scalar Field".
Also from Minneapolis, dance artist Max Wirsing will perform a filmic erasure of Brokeback Mountain. Seattle-based theater artist Erin Pike presents "That'sWhatSheSaid," a mashup of lines spoken by female characters in the most-produced plays of 2013-14. Two Oakland-based multidisciplinary artists will contribute writing: poet Tom Comitta's unrelenting excerpt of his appropriated novel The City of Nature and Sam Hertz's surprising text piece created via closed captioning tool. Nationally-recognized playwright Sibyl Kempson contributes excerpts of two theatrical rituals surrounding the myth of Sasquatch, selected from eyewitness accounts and Internet chatrooms.
"'Uncreativity' is a term used by conceptual poet Kenneth Goldsmith to describe his appropriative writing practices, so maybe it's perfectly apropos to steal the word myself," Mullaney says. "But whereas he copy and pastes his material, the performances I'm featuring must re-produce themselves with every iteration. There's an interesting tension there that is wholly specific to live performance."
