Under the Gaslight
Thrills! Laughs! Tears! Fake moustaches! And lots of farce and fun!
The life of Laura Courtland is one of unbridled joy and gaiety, surrounded by beloved family, adoring friends and the promise of wedded bliss. But when a mysterious visitor arrives bearing a dark secret, can even the help of a noble hero, loyal friends and dauntless derring-do triumph against the evil that befalls her?
Featuring drama, comedy, suspense, live musical accompaniment and the infamous origin of the dramatic rescue-from-the-railroad-tracks scene, the play that writer Augustin Daly described as "A Totally Original and Picturesque Drama of Life and Love in these Times" stands as a testament to 19th Century American Melodrama. For in the time before Melodrama became a term of derision and scorn, it stood for a drama which made no apologies for giving its audience excitement far larger than life, and painting for them a world in which virtue is in peril, villainy is at is most vile, but heroism and nobility can still win the day if there are those who will fight for it.
So come on out to cheer for the hero, weep for the damsel, boo for the villain, and be transported to a world where nothing is small, nothing is subtle and nothing would dare be dull – the world of Under the Gaslight!
