The Tudor Choir: Queen of Heaven
A sequence of medieval chant and Renaissance polyphony in honor of the Virgin Mary, featuring works by master composers Josquin Desprez, Tomas Luis de Victoria, and Palestrina.
Single tickets $25 general admission $10 student ABOUT QUEEN OF HEAVEN
The four Marian antiphons that form the centerpiece of the Tudor Choir's Queen of Heaven program are considered exquisite examples of devotional poetry and medieval chant. The antiphons--Alma redemptoris mater, Ave regina caelorum, Regina coeli, and Salve regina--are sung seasonally throughout the year at the end of Compline, the last of the daily canonical hours. They were also frequently set for choir by Renaissance-era composers. Among the best known are the lush double-choir settings by famed Spaniard Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), whose music epitomizes the mystical and devotional qualities associated with Spanish Renaissance religious art.
Queen of Heaven will also include double-choir works by Giovanni Perluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525-1594), the leading Italian composer of the late Renaissance. His settings of the Magnificat (Mary's song from St. Luke) and Stabat mater (an intensely devotional text about Mary's experience at the foot of the cross) demonstrate his mastery of the genre, from the bold, fanfare-like statements of the Magnificat to the lyrical, poignant melodies of Stabat mater.
Franco-Flemish master Josquin Desprez (c. 1450-1521) will be represented by two of his best-known works: the composer's beloved, serene setting of Ave Maria, for four voices, and his spacious six-voice setting of the Marian sequence, Benedicta es.
Queen of Heaven is the second of three concerts in the Tudor Choir's 2010-2011 series, co-presented by the Tudor Choir and Blessed Sacrament Church.
