About the entertainment:
GRUPO CUMBÉ is a 6-piece dance band which fuses traditional afro-Colombian percussion, with elements of big band style Cumbia and Jazz made famous by artists like Lucho Bermudez and the Discos Fuentes record label catalog.
Incorporated are call & response vocals, raw traditional percussion courtesy of the Alegre and Tambora drums, bottom heavy
upright bass lines, Gaita flutes, latin piano and jazz trumpet. This fusion of traditional percussion with innovative arrangements gives the group a sound which is both retro and original at once.
JUVENATO is a Chicago based group that plays an authentic yet innovative version of Colombian vallenato, cumbia, merengue, paseo and son. Their poignant and energetic music attracts a diverse fan base of young and old, who dance enthusiastically to the African based rhythms. The name Juvenato is a compilation of the Spanish words "juventud" meaning youth and "vallenato" one of the popular folk music of Colombia.
With a special appearance by Tierra Colombiana Folkloric Dance Company,
The Midwest's top Colombian dance company
About the cause:
Fundacion Batata is a new cultural organization started by the members of the LAS ALEGRES AMBULANCIAS, a traditional music group from the town of San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia (population 2,500). This town was founded in the early 1600's after a slave revolt in Cartagena and today is the town in Colombia which has most successfully preserved Afro-Colombian music, language and culture. For this reason it has been declared a "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible World Heritage" by the United Nations office of UNESCO.
With the help of Macondo, this organization is being founded with the goal of purchasing a small plot of land in San Basilio de Palenque, where the entire community plans on building a community arts and music school for the children of the town, in an effort pass along the West African traditions that are danger of being lost due to high levels of poverty and racism.
