Columbia Unbecoming and Looking Over My Shoulder
On the fifth anniversary of its debut, AFA will re-screen Columbia Unbecoming a 2004 documentary film that roused a firestorm alleging anti-Israel sentiment and academic intimidation in the MEALAC department at Columbia University in New York.
The film set off a lively debate which largely took place over the 2005 academic year. Widely dubbed the MEALAC scandal, it centered on the question of what to do about allegations intimidation by professors, as well as the meaning of "academic freedom".The Panel which follows the screening will review the consequences of the the film's broadcast and what has changed and what remains the same at Columbia today.
Looking Over My Shoulder offers a frightening examination of the failures of the U.C. Regents to adequately monitor and discipline the outbreak of antisemitic incidents on U.C campuses.
