Warren Anatomical Museum and the 19th Century American Anatomy Museum
Date: Friday, March 13th
Time: 8pm
Admission: $8
Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum

In 1888, John Shaw Billings called the Warren Anatomical Museum "the best museum connected with a medical school in this country." Today it could be argued that it is one of the last anatomy museums still associated with an American medical school. This talk will cover the history of this surviving anatomy and pathology museum, started in 1847 to assist in the teaching of Harvard Medical School students. The program will also explore the larger 19th- and early 20th-century anatomy and pathology museum community in the United States and place the Warren Museum within this historical landscape.

Dominic Hall is the curator of the Warren Anatomical Museum, Center for the History of Medicine at the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine of Harvard Medical School. As part of his work at the museum, Dominic examines the history of anatomical teaching in New England and 19th-century American anatomy and pathology museums. He is the current president of the Medical Museums Association.
