The Caucasian Chalk Circle
The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht, translated by James and Tania Stern with W.H. Auden Directed by Beth Raas-Bergquist
Brecht's comic play The Caucasian Chalk Circle follows the unfortunate Grusha after she accidentally steals a baby left behind by his uncaring, bourgeois parents. Pursued through the fairytalesque Grusinia by the army and cast out by other peasants, she finds herself facing the child's mother in front of Azdak, a drunk and unconventional judge, who will ultimately decide the child's real mother. Based on a combination of story of the biblical King Solomon and a Chinese legend, The Caucasian Chalk Circle combines music and stage magic with sharp political commentary.
