Tchaikovsky's classic ballet "Swan Lake" is presented by Benicia Ballet Theatre and Solano Community College with the Symphony Orchestra of Northern California. This program is generously funded by a grant to the Solano Community College Department by the Kitchell Corporation.
Artistic Director, Margaret Rose Kenrick Conductor, Steven Thompson
Having not found a suitable bride before his birthday ball, Prince Siegfried seeks refuge in the forest. Coming along a lake, he sees swans in the distance. As they approach, he sees the Princess Odette, a half-swan, half-woman creature. Odette has been cast under a magic spell by the evil Von Rothbart forcing her to remain at the lake captured as a swan by day and woman by night. Once the Prince returns to the castle for the ball, he meets Odeile, daughter of Von Rothbart, who looks strikingly like Odette. The Prince mistakes Odeile for Odette and proclaims his intention to make her his wife. Moments later, he realizes his mistake and returns to the lake to apologize to Odette. She forgives him, but Von Rothbart appears and tries to keep them apart. When Odette proclaims her love for Siegfried, Von Rothbart spares Siegfried, but Odette must remain forever a Swan.
