Directed by Iraqi Kurd SHAWKAT AMIN KORKI
Iraqi Kurdistan, Japan, 2009, 81 minutes, Color
An unused soccer stadium acts as a makeshift home for hundreds of
Kurdish, Arab, Turkish, and Assyrian refugees in this award-winning
film from Kurdish filmmaker, Shawkat Amin Korki. Amidst the tragically
abandoned but visually stunning environment of a more peaceful time,
Asu (Kurdish singer Shwan Atuf) decides to lift the spirits of his
injured brother and impress his neighbor, the lovely Helin, with
activities to distract everyone from the grey world around them. Comic
circumstances follow as Asu and his friend Sako try to arrange a
soccer tournament, and struggle to get sponsors, jerseys, and even a
ball, all in contrast with explosions going off just beyond.
Stunningly shot in both black & white and color, this entertaining
tale of friendship and a growing sense of community earned the Grand
Prize at both the Gulf and Taipei International Film Festivals and the
International Film Critics Award in 2009.
In Kurdish and Arabic with English Subtitles
After Party Presented by Washington Film Institute and Catered by Zenobia Cafe.
