Talking Sex with Your Doctor
Talking about sex with your partner or with friends can be difficult. Talking about sex with your doctor... can seem pretty much impossible! So often, we haven't had enough contact with our healthcare providers to know how they'll react to hearing our sexual truths. When most doctors receive little to no sex education in their professional training, it's no surprise why so many are unsure of how to create open dialogue about sex in sensitive and affirming ways. But patients have the power to take charge of the conversation too! In this workshop sex educator, Andrea Renae, will give you the knowledge and skills necessary for you to become informed and involved in your own healthcare.
You'll learn:
-How to self-advocate and effectively communicate your needs and concerns about your sexual health. -Ways to reduce anxiety and manage the range of emotions that can come from being vulnerable and discussing sex with your doctor. -How to find health care providers who are comfortable discussing sexual health and are culturally competent in sexual and gender diversity. -About resources available to patients for sexual health information and other supportive services.
Andrea Renae is a sex ed-venturer! A genderqueer and sexually fluid person, her work as a sex educator, coach, writer, and advocate is focused on encouraging exploration of sexual practices, identities, and communities. Andrea believes that everyone has the right to be fully self-expressed.
Andrea got her start in sex education 7 years ago through their work within the public health sphere. Since then, she has worked in various non profits and sex toy stores, including Philadelphia's highly regarded sex toy and fetish wear shop, Passional Boutique and Sexploratorium and The Pleasure Chest Los Angeles. She currently teaches workshops at colleges, non-profit organizations, sex toy shops, and community events. Andrea is working towards her Master's degree in Human Sexuality Education at Widener University. Specialties and topics of interest include: Sexual Health and Wellness, BDSM/Kink, Non-monogamy, LGBTQIA issues, Sexual Exploration, Creativity in Sexual Play, and Intimacy Building.
Andrea works to establish educational spaces for adults to actively engage in dialogue and experiment safely. With a friendly, kid next door look, dedication to accessibility and inclusivity, and (sex)positive attitude Andrea creates a welcoming, non-judgmental, and supportive environment for adult learners of all ages, genders, and expressions.
Community involvement is incredibly important to Andrea, thus she serves as a Co-emissary for Sex Geekdom Philly and Los Angeles and a Co-organizer for the Philly Reproductive Health Happy Hour. Andrea contributes regularly to Kinkly.com as a staff writer, and has been featured in The Philadelphia City Paper, The Condom Monologues, RedheadBedhead.com, and The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom Blog.
