Camera-free cinema using plant matter directly onto movie film
Direct animationâÂ"making movies without cameras by directly painting, scratching, or otherwise creating image
on clear and colored film leadersâÂ"is a caveman-like form of cinema that has been practiced around the world as
long as there have been movies. Within this quirky genre, over the years there has emerged a recurrent subgenre
whereby filmmakers use flowers, foliage, and other botanical and organic material as their image-making
emulsion. Though techniques and aesthetics differ, what results often straddles definitions of art and science.
These botanical animations offer transformative glimpses into unseen worlds. (Caryn Cline is teaching the
Botanicalista workshop the day before so you can learn to do it yourself, with the results seen here).
