35mm Young Dirkie and Uncle Pete are enjoying a flight across the unforgiving Kalahari Desert in a
small plane when Uncle Pete suffers a heart attack; losing control of the plane. However, Pete manages
to land the plane in relative safely. He himself dies, while Dirkie and his pet dog survive. At this point
the film switches gears and follows Dirkie's various (and sometimes hallucinatory) adventures while he
struggles to survive the harsh desert conditions, including an encounter with Kalahari Bushmen; who
give him help, but then abandon him to once again fend for himself. Dirkie's father becomes
increasingly desperate in his search, littering the Kalahari with bizarre leaflets from a plane containing
instructions for Dirkie on how to survive in the desert. Lost in the Desert is a truly strange and
fascinating kid's film.
