TRASH HUMPERS / Dir. Harmony Korine / 2010 / USA / 77min / 35mm
Aging enfant terrible and self-proclaimed "most American" of American indie filmmakers, Harmony
Korine (Gummo) makes a return to the form that made him a poster child for groundbreaking
experimental film in the 90's with this gloriously desultory slap in the face of good taste and public
decency. Korine proposed this film as a VHS tape found in a ditch; a piece of throw-away art. Trash
Humpers is most simply described, as a quasi-underground, midnight friendly, faux-primitive
"artifact". It documents a trio of fake geriatric hobos, outfitted in thrift-store finery with faces frozen by
wrinkled masks, engaging in all manner of antisocial behavior. Korine has said of the film, "It's kind of
like an ode to vandalism. There can be a creative beauty in their mayhem and destruction. You could
say that these characters are poets or mystics of mayhem and murder- They're having a great time."
