RED CHAPEL / Dir. Mads Brugger / 2009 / Korea, Netherlands / 88 min. / HDCAM
In this hilariously subversive movie (winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival for
World Cinema Documentary!), our unlikely Danish/Korean subjects set out to do what others have
tried to do with sanctions and military invasions--only with humor--and that is to challenge the
notorious regime of Kim Jong Il's North Korea...and get away with it! Will they succeed? You'll have to
wait and see as a self-proclaimed "spastic" and his straight-man pose as a Danish theater troupe and try
to pull a huge prank on some of the most watchful eyes on earth. While "the troupe" uses their Danish
and Korean language abilities to hide in plain sight, the North Korean government intervenes to clean
up the act for public consumption with cringe-worthy results. At the same time this is a rare journey
into one of the least represented countries in the world. In Danish, English, and Korean with English
subtitles.
