TIMES SQUARE / Dir. Allan Moyle / 1980 / USA / 111 min. / 35mm
One of Kathleen Hanna's (Bikini Kill, Le Tigre) favorite films, Times Square is the second of our twofilm celebration of rebel girl-punk inspiration movies. Tough and streetwise Nicky meets sheltered rich
kid Pamela when both are sent to a mental hospital for examination. Forming an instant intense bond,
they decide to run away, ending up in a still-sleazy, pre-Giuliani, pre-Disney Times Square. Squatting
in a derelict abandoned warehouse, they start a punk band, the Sleez Sisters, which attracts the attention
of all-night DJ Johnny LaGuardia. He puts them on the air, their passion and fury attracting a rabid fan
base of similarly unhappy teens, and cult heroines are born. Director Allan Moyle went on to create cult
film faves Pump Up The Volume and Empire Records. Featuring a legendary punk and new wave
soundtrack, Times Square is "socially irresponsible and refreshingly optimistic: a Wizard of Oz for the
80s (Time Out Film Guide).
