ROLL OUT, COWBOY followed by live performance with Sandman the Rappin Cowboy
1:00 pm
ROLL OUT, COWBOY / Dir. Elizabeth Lawrence / 2010 / USA / 75 min. / HDCAM
This film documents a year in the life of former Olympia resident Chris Sand, a.k.a. Sandman the
Rappin' Cowboy. After leaving Olympia, Chris moved to Dunn Center, North Dakota--population 122.
Through footage of Chris at his North Dakota home and on a Midwest-to-Northwest tour (including a
performance at the Capitol Theater!), Roll Out, Cowboy shows Sandman trying to forge a single
identity for himself out of a truly dualistic life, where he's part rapper, part cowboy; part touring
musician, part lonesome truck driver; a liberal college town entertainer trying to fit in with the
conservative micro-community of his chosen home, all spiced with stories and shots of the kind of
Americana Chris is trying to keep alive. While the foundations of Sandman's music come from two
seemingly opposite poles, we see how his stripped-down sound and unadorned words contain hopeful
ingredients most anyone can feel at home with - except maybe in Cincinnati.
Live performance by Sandman after the show!
