Who have the people been in your life who exposed you to new worlds, changed your assumptions, encouraged you to stretch and grow? Bill Coperthwaite may be the most influential person in New England who didn't have a phone or an email address, and who is one of those unusual Americans who shun public visibility as avarice and yet is a worthwhile public figure.

On a winter morning in 2013, six people paddled his body, their close friend, across a bay to a wild homestead on the coast of Maine where he would be buried in a hand-dug grave. This is the story of the life and death and friendships of that remarkable man, Bill Coperthwaite: homesteader and social critique in the lineage of Henry David Thoreau and Scott Nearing.
